Mailbox covers make a statement about your household to every passerby. Your special mailbox cover gives first-time visitors something to spot when searching for your house. A mailbox cover does not have to cost a lot to look great. In fact, if you are making your own mailbox covers from recycled materials they can be free.

Step 1

Measure your mailbox using a soft measuring tape that you can wrap around the top of the mailbox. Begin at the base of the mailbox on one side, go over the top, and stop at the base on the opposite side. Then measure your mailbox from the front to the back. You do not want to overlap the mailbox door if it covers part of the outside of the mailbox.

Step 2

Cut a piece of leftover wallpaper, a holiday shopping bag, or an old favorite T-shirt that is the correct size for your mailbox. For something special such as a birthday party or new baby, print two identical pictures from your computer in full sheet format.

Step 3

Cover printed pictures or holiday gift bags made of paper with laminate to protect them from the weather. Stores may provide holiday bags for your purchases around Christmas and Halloween. Save these bags for future decorations.

Step 4

Secure your mailbox cover to the mailbox with an adhesive such as Liquid Nails. Make sure to make a continuous line along the outer perimeter of the cover you designed. A spatula should help you spread the adhesive evenly. Dots of adhesive across the top and sides should be sufficient if the perimeter is covered.

Step 5

Spray the outside of your new mailbox cover with a clear acrylic craft spray. This is not necessary for mailbox covers that have laminate over them.
