Concrete is a strong construction material used for flooring, walls, and structural components. While it is durable, it is prone to damage from environmental elements and everyday wear, and is difficult to install. The easiest way to repair concrete flooring is with the use of self-leveling concrete, which is simple to install right over the damaged flooring, and yet still retains all the desirable properties of regular concrete.
Thoroughly clean the entire pouring area with a high-pressure water hose. Use a wire brush to remove any loose debris from cracks, and ensure there are no oil-based compounds remaining such as paint. Proper surface preparation is critical for the successful installation of self-leveling concrete. Apply a single strip of expansion tape along any walls that contact the area. This tape will allow the new concrete surface to expand and contract as the temperature changes.
Self-leveling concrete needs to be mixed with water according to the manufacturer's specifications. Mix for three to four minutes until the liquid is homogenous, with the consistency of a fine batter.
Pour the self-leveling concrete mixture onto the prepped area in 2-foot wide swatches. Use a concrete rake or trowel to spread the mixture if necessary. Continue pouring the mixture in 2-foot wide squares until the entire surface is covered. Do not worry about an unlevel surface, gravity will act on the mixture evenly and level the surface over time.
Leave the freshly poured area uncovered and allow at least 72 hours for it to completely dry. After it has set, apply a layer of moisture-sealing paint to the surface, which will preserve the life of your new concrete work.
