How to Clean Glue Off of Upholstery

J. Johnson

Certain household projects and crafts require different types of glue. You might be using a water-based glue when working with paper or doing crafts with the kids. However, more powerful glues, such as Superglue, might need to be used for more intense projects, such as gluing on the handle of a ceramic cup.

Glue can get stuck on upholstery and leave a stain.

If any type of glue should get onto your upholstery, you will need to employ some very specific cleaning techniques to remove it and save your furniture.

Water-Based

  1. Use a hard object, such as a flat spatula to scrape the glue off of the upholstery.

  2. Mix two cups of cool water with one tablespoon of detergent in a container. Mix until suds appear.

  3. Soak a cloth in the water and detergent mixture. Sponge the glue repeatedly until it transfers from the upholstery to your cloth. Continue sponging with different areas until this happens.

  4. Saturate a new cloth in cold water, and use it to rinse the cleaning solution from your upholstery.

Strong Glue

  1. Blot up or scrape off any strong glue that you can see on the upholstery.

  2. Put acetone into an eye dropper and carefully add one or two drops to your upholstery.

  3. Sponge the acetone with a clean cloth as soon as you drop it on with the eyedropper.

  4. Add dry cleaning solvent to a new cloth, and use that to blot the affected area repeatedly. This will remove the strong glue.

  5. Put some hydrogen peroxide in your eyedropper if the glue will not come off. Add a few drops to the area. Then, blot with a dry cloth to remove the glue and soak up excess liquid.
