How to Remove a Rust Stain From Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a material often used for kitchen sinks due to its tendency to resist staining. Unfortunately, stainless steel is not immune to rust. If you have naturally hard water or have made the mistake of leaving a wet steel wool scouring pad laying against your stainless steel, you may notice rust stains and oxidation. You can remove rust stains from stainless steel, however, and restore it to a brilliant shine.

Remove a Rust Stain From Stainless Steel

Step 1

Rub the stainless steel rust stain with a damp paper towel to remove any excess oxidation.

Step 2

Scour the rust stain with an abrasive cleaner and a non-metal scouring pad. A metal scouring pad will complicate the problem.

Step 3

Rinse the rust stain with lukewarm water.

Step 4

Scrub away what remains of the stain using a damp eraser pad. Eraser pads can be purchased at your local grocery or hardware store.

Step 5

Rinse the rust stain again. Repeat the process until you have removed the rust stain from your stainless steel.
