Buckles on straps, belts, overalls or boots may rust over time as their protective coating wears down and they are exposed to moisture and air. Commercial rust removers are effective for removing rust, but may be corrosive and toxic. Before resorting to these products try a few homemade remedies for removing rust. Protect leather or fabrics by covering them with a paper towel before you begin.
Rub the rust stains gently with a piece of extra fine steel wool. Wipe away any debris with a damp paper towel and dry with a clean cloth.
Sprinkle 1 tbsp. salt on the rust stain and pour enough lemon juice over it to wet it. Wait five minutes.
Rub the stain with a paper towel or the steel wool. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry.
