How to Remove Gum From Plastic

Chewing gum can be a nuisance when it ends up on the plastic floor mats in the car, on the furniture or just about anywhere it doesn't belong. While it can be a sticky mess, chewing gum can be easily removed from most surfaces, especially plastic. A few simple steps will banish the gum in no time.

Small Plastic Items

Place items in the freezer to harden gum.

Put small plastic items in a freezer bag and place the bag in the freezer for about two hours. This will give the gum time to harden.

Step 2

Remove bag from freezer and check that gum is completely frozen. Gently scrape off gum with a butter knife. Gum will come off quite easily.

Step 3

Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining gum residue.

Large Plastic Items

Ice easily helps remove chewing gum.

Fill a plastic bag with ice and place directly on the chewing gum.

Step 2

Leave ice on the gum for five minutes and then check to see if the gum has hardened. Do not try to remove the gum unless it has hardened completely.

Step 3

Scrape off gum with butter knife.

Step 4

Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining gum residue.
