Making your own liquid fabric softener saves you money and reduces your family's exposure to harmful chemicals. The inexpensive ingredients for this homemade laundry concoction are safe and non-toxic, yet the finished product does an effective job of making clothing feel softer while helping to reduce static cling. When you finish mixing up this simple recipe, you'll have enough fabric softener to last for several weeks of laundry.
Pour 1 cup of baking soda into a plastic gallon container.
Add 1 cup of water to the container, followed slowly by 6 cups of white distilled vinegar. The vinegar and baking soda will fizz.
Pour in 7 more cups of water. Cover the container and swirl the mixture. Remove the cover a few times to vent any gasses.
Add a few drops of essential oil, if you desire, and swirl the mixture again gently.
Pour 1 cup of the fabric softener into your washer during the final rinse cycle. Shake the bottle prior to adding the fabric softener if it contains essential oil.
