How to Remove Salt Buildup on a Zipper

How to Remove Salt Buildup on a Zipper. Salt corrosion wreaks havoc on metal, especially during the winter months. In addition, damp storage areas can lead to corrosive salt buildup over time.

If you have winter boots or outerwear with salt corrosion, you can remove salt buildup on a zipper, eyelets or other metal areas without ruining your clothing.

Tip

Once you've removed the salt buildup, rub a candle along the zipper's teeth. The wax will help protect the teeth from future corrosion, as well as make it zip up and down more smoothly.

  1. Use an old toothbrush with a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and water to rub away the salt residue. Open and close the zipper several times, scrubbing carefully between the teeth in both the open and closed position. If the corrosion is mild, this may be the only treatment you need.

  2. Scrub the area with a small wire brush. Use a softer wire, such as copper, and rub it gently across the areas of corrosion. Vigorous scrubbing works quicker, but can lead to permanent scratches in the metal.

  3. Wipe undiluted cola on the metal with an old toothbrush. Scrub the area thoroughly. Cola contains a small amount of phosphoric acid, a product that eats away salt corrosion. Use this option only on washable items, as the cola will leave a sugary residue that can attract ants.

  4. Use a commercial salt remover such as Salt-X to clean the corrosion off your zipper. Be sure to test the product's colorfastness on a small, hidden area first.
