Making your own laundry soap is a great way to save money and be eco-friendly. The usual ingredients for laundry soap are simple soap, borax and washing soda. Washing soda and borax, however, may be difficult to find in some places, and borax may even be somewhat harsh on your linens or laundry. Fortunately, you can make a homemade laundry detergent without using either of those ingredients.
Measure 1 cup of liquid castile soap and empty into the cooking pot.
Add 4 cups of water to the pot and bring the mixture to a rolling boil (bubbles will rapidly rise to the surface of the water).
Remove the soap mixture from heat and add 1 cup of baking soda to the mixture. Stir to combine all ingredients.
Empty the mixture into the 3-gallon container.
Pour 1 3/4 gallons of hot water into the container with the soap mixture. Stir to combine.
Use 1/3 cup of detergent per load of laundry washed and cover the container with a lid when detergent is not in use.
