How to Get Rid of Kitchen Drain Odors

You could be the most disciplined housekeeper in the world, wrapping up food scraps and tossing them in the garbage and rinsing your plates and dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. But still it's bound to happen: Some stray food winds up down your kitchen drain and, before you know it, you're confronted with odors that are less than appetizing. Ridding your kitchen drain of odors is not only simple but also can be accomplished by using natural ingredients.

Step 1 Clear Any Obstructions

Launch a search and rescue mission in your kitchen drain. Reach down inside and remove any food scraps. Make sure the lighting is optimal, even training a flashlight down the drain if necessary to locate and remove the source of the odor.

Step 2 Flush the Drain

Turn on the faucet and flush the drain thoroughly. Mix ½ cup of salt in about a gallon of water, heat it just shy of boiling and pour the salty solution down the drain to purge any lingering traces of residue.

Step 3 Add Baking Soda

Sprinkle some baking soda down the drain. Begin slowly by pouring in about a quarter of a small box of baking soda and thoroughly flushing the drain with water. If you still detect an odor, add another one-quarter box of this safe, odor-absorbing product.

Step 4 Augment With Vinegar

Pour about ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup of white vinegar. The safe resulting chemical reaction of the two ingredients can break down any remaining undetectable clogs triggering a drain odor. Wait a few minutes and then flush the drain with warm water.

An Ounce (or So) of Prevention

Prevent food particles from slipping down your kitchen drain by using a strainer or stopper as you rinse or wash dishes. If something sneaks past you, flush the drain promptly with water. Run your garbage disposal for about 15 seconds after doing the dishes.

Stem drain odors by cutting up small pieces of a citrus fruit – such as a lemon or orange – and running them through the garbage disposal every few weeks.
