How to Clean a Sleep Number Bed

Sleep Number beds feature patented DualAir technology, which allows you to adjust your mattress to a personal comfort level using a wireless remote. The brand includes the Classic Series, the Performance Series, the Innovation Series, the Memory Foam Series and the X12 series -- which features all of the company's technologies in one bed. To protect your mattress from stains, top it with a customized cover and/or mattress pad. If you do get your Sleep Number mattress dirty, it's easy to clean it using nontoxic, everyday products.

Spot-Cleaning Your Mattress

If you spilled a liquid, such as coffee, on your Sleep Number mattress cover, work it out of the cover by adding a few drops of a mild dish-washing liquid to plain sparkling water and mixing to combine. Dip a clean, soft cloth into the solution and blot at the stain, repeating the process as many times as needed until the spot is gone. Avoid oversaturating the mattress cover, because the liquid could seep into the mattress and create mold or mildew.

Per the manufacturer's instructions, don't machine wash and dry or dry clean the bed's mattress cover or base coverlet. Also, don't treat either item with a stain guard -- the chemical may cause the fabric to yellow.

Deodorize Your Mattress with Baking Soda

If your Sleep Number bed is in need of deodorizing because of pet odors or food smells, remove the mattress cover and sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over both fabric and memory foam mattresses. Allow the baking soda to rest on the mattress overnight, and then vacuum it up with the appliance's brush attachment.

Using an Enzymatic Cleaner

The best way to clean protein-based stains, such as pet or human urine, blood or vomit, from your mattress or mattress cover is with an enzymatic cleaner. The enzymes bond with the protein molecules, such as uric acid found in urine, and break them down into gases, which eventually evaporate. Before using the cleaner, test a small area of the mattress or mattress cover to check for colorfastness. Choose an enzymatic cleaner formulated for use on the type of mattress you have, and apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's important to allow the cleaner to air dry, because it breaks down the proteins as it dries.

Further Protect Your Sleep Number Bed with a Mattress Pad

Sleep Number also offers a patented Total Protection Mattress Pad, which is waterproof and stain-resistant. If it gets soiled, machine-wash the pad with cold water and a mild laundry detergent, and tumble dry on the low gentle setting as needed. Do not bleach, iron or dry clean it.
