How to Wash an Electric Blanket

An electric blanket can keep you warm on chilly winter nights. Since it contains heating elements, it can't be handled like an ordinary blanket; it needs special care. Otherwise, the wires can become damaged, and the product will need to be replaced. When an electric blanket becomes soiled, you can wash it in a machine but not exactly like a regular blanket. There are Do's and Don'ts in the process that you need to know about, so you can do it right.

Machine Washing

Step 1

Unplug the blanket's electric cord from the wall outlet. Disconnect the power cord and the control unit from the product. Inspect the electric blanket to make sure all cords are disconnected.

Step 2

Set the washer to a delicate or gentle cycle. Set the load size to accommodate the size of the blanket. Wait for the tub to fill with lukewarm water. Add the recommended amount of laundry detergent. Allow the washer to agitate for a minute or so. Then, stop the washer and add the electric blanket. Let it soak for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Turn the washer back on and wash the electric blanket for two minutes. Turn the selector to the rinse cycle. Run the blanket through the rinse and spin cycles.

Step 4

Set the clothes dryer on low heat and turn it on for two minutes. Place the electric blanket in the dryer and set the timer for 10 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the damp blanket and lay it on a clean surface. Gently stretch it out until it has been restored to its original shape and size. Hang the electric blanket over a clothesline to finish drying.

Step 6

Unplug the blanket's electric cord from the wall outlet. Disconnect the power cord and the control unit from the product. Inspect the electric blanket to make sure all cords are disconnected.

Step 7

Fill a wash tub with enough lukewarm water to allow the blanket to move freely. Refer to the directions on the laundry detergent container and add the recommended amount.

Step 8

Swish the detergent around with your hand to make suds. Place the electric blanket in the tub and soak it for 15 minutes.

Step 9

Squeeze the blanket gently in the suds for a minute and then remove it. Rinse it in fresh water. Gently squeeze the blanket until it's not soaking wet.

Step 10

Hang the electric blanket over a clothesline to dry. Gently stretch it out until it's back to its original shape and size.
