How to Clean Upholstery With Oxyclean

Joyce Starr

Cleaning your upholstered furniture is cheaper than throwing it out and buying new. If you don't already own one, you should rent a steam rug cleaner that comes with furniture-cleaning attachments. It will make your life so much easier.

Also, using OxiClean to clean the upholstery almost guarantees you will get it clean. OxiClean has shown great results in getting many things clean, including upholstery.

  1. Vacuum the piece of furniture first. Get rid of any sand, dirt or other loose material before you start cleaning the upholstery with OxiClean. Otherwise, you'll just push the loose dirt deeper into the upholstery and make the job of cleaning that much harder.

  2. Rent a steam cleaner with upholstery attachments. You usually can find them at your local grocery store or hardware store. Purchase a canister of OxiClean at these same places. If you're dealing with stained spots on the upholstery, buy a bottle of the premixed OxiClean spot remover spray.

  3. Connect the upholstery cleaning attachments to the steam cleaner per the instructions. Remove any cushions from the couch or chair, since these will be cleaned separately from the furniture. Pull the furniture away from the wall, so you can get to the backside with the cleaning unit. If there are spots that need to be treated first, spray the area with the OxiClean spot treatment solution and work in with a damp cloth. Allow the OxiClean spot treatment to sit approximately 10 to 15 minutes before you start cleaning with the steam cleaner.

  4. Mix a scoopful of OxiClean into the steam cleaner's water holding unit with warm water. Using a long spoon or stick, stir the OxiClean until it's dissolved in the water.

  5. Attach the water holding unit onto the steam cleaner and begin cleaning the upholstery with the upholstery attachments. Suck up as much water as possible as you're cleaning. If an area is particularly dirty, you may have to go over it again.

  6. If you desire, fill the holding tank with clean water and go over the upholstery one last time to remove any OxiClean that remains in the fabric.

  7. Allow the upholstery to completely dry. Set any cushions off to the side so they can also dry. Don't place them directly on the furniture, or the underside will take longer to dry and you may create another problem for yourself. Once dry, you'll appreciate how good your upholstery looks and the great job OxiClean did.
