There are many secrets one should know about smoke odors and how to get rid of them. Smoke odors can be very unpleasant and overpowering, but knowing a few tips and tricks can remove the smoke odor. Doing these few things will help make the smell of your home more pleasant.
The smell of smoke is caused by leftover tars and resins, which vinegar can cut through. The acetic acid in vinegar will break down the smell. By leaving bowls or open containers of vinegar around your house, it will cut down the smoke odor. Vinegar can also be used to clean the bathroom, kitchen and any hard surfaces or walls that may have a build up of tar and resins.
A carpet shampooer will help eliminate the smoke odors in carpets. There are three ways to do this: rent a shampooer from your local hardware store, buy a carpet shampooer from a retail store, or have a professional come and steam clean the carpets. Either way, this will pull smoke odor out of the carpet, leaving it clean and smelling fresh.
Any time you are able to open your windows and let the house air out, do so. Allowing fresh air to travel through the house will help get the smoke odor out. Air flowing throughout the house will take tar and resin particles out and bring fresh air in, especially if you have a cross-draft.
Put baking soda in your ashtrays to help pull some of the smoke into the baking soda, and dump or replace the soda weekly.
You can also sprinkle baking soda on your carpets and furniture. Leave the baking soda on for a few days so it has time to soak up some of the smoke odor, and then vacuum it all up. Repeat this process until the smoke odor is completely gone.
Wash all curtains and drapes often. Smoke odor gets trapped in fabric and clothes, and these need to be washed often to get rid of the smoke smell.
If you cannot seem to get rid of the smoke odor, you can also put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Walls with tars and resins that are stubborn to get rid of by scrubbing with soap and water or vinegar can be repainted to get rid of the smoke odor.
