Few things increase relaxation and loosen tense muscles like sinking into a whirlpool bathtub filled with warm, rippling water. But as the bubbles soothe your skin, the dirt and oils in the bathwater push in and out of the jets, allowing bacteria and buildup to accumulate. Regularly cleaning the jets in the bathtub ensures the tub and system remain clean and hygienic. The same system that causes the pulsing in the water also aids in cleaning the jets and the tub, minimizing the need for strenuous scrubbing.
Step 1
Open windows and doors and turn on your bathroom's ventilation system. The products you'll use to clean whirlpool tub jets emit strong fumes.

Spray the interior of the tub with nonabrasive bathroom cleaner or the product recommended by the tub's manufacturer. Wipe the tub down with a clean, soft lint-free rag and rinse the tub with cool water. This prevents any residue remaining in the tub from circulating through the jet system during cleaning.
Step 3
Scrub the inside of the jets with a dampened old toothbrush to loosen dirt, debris and soap scum buildup. If you have removable jets, pull the jet out and clean the interior and exterior with a toothbrush. When excess buildup is present, soak the jets in equal parts white distilled vinegar and cool water for 30 minutes before scrubbing. Once clean, reinstall the jets.
Step 4
Fill the tub with the hottest water allowed by the manufacturer, which should be between 130 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the water to rise at least 1 inch above the jets. Turn the jets on and let the system run for 15 minutes. Then drain the tub.
Step 5
Refill the tub with hot water, at least 1 inch above the jets. Add 1 to 2 cups of liquid chlorine bleach or white distilled vinegar. Do not use both at the same time. Turn the jets on and let them run for 15 minutes to disinfect the jets. Drain the solution.
Step 6
Fill the tub one more time with cool to lukewarm water. Turn on the jets and let them run for five to 10 minutes to rinse away the bleach or vinegar residue. Drain the tub.
Step 7
Spray the interior of the tub with bathroom cleaner and wipe it down to remove any remaining residue. Rinse the tub thoroughly with cool water and dry it with a clean microfiber rag.
Step 8
Clean the tub every two weeks with powdered or liquid dishwashing detergent or biofilm cleaner. Disinfect the tub with white distilled vinegar or bleach once a month after cleaning.
Step 9
Replace the tub's filter every three months to aid in preventing buildup in the system and jets.
