Homemade Hot Tub Cleaner

Chelsea Fitzgerald

Sitting in a hot tub filled with bubbling, steamy water is a wonderful way to relax after a long day at work or a day busy with activities. Hot tubs take up less space and are less expensive than swimming pools.

Clean your hot tub every three months.

You should drain and clean the acrylic or vinyl shell about once every three months, according to the Hot Tub Guide website. Manufacturers recommend that you use cleaners that you would normally use in your bathtub and shower area. It is easy to make a homemade cleaner that is effective and will save you money on cleaning supplies

Warning

Do not use abrasive cleaners or ones that contain bleach on the acrylic or vinyl shell of your hot tub, according to the Hot Tub Guide website.

Vinegar Cleaner

  1. Use vinegar to clean your hot tub. It is mildly acidic and inhibits the growth of mold, as suggested by Better Homes and Gardens.

  2. Wet a sponge or soft cloth with warm water and wring it out.

  3. Apply some white distilled vinegar to the cloth or sponge and wipe down all surface areas in the hot tub. The vinegar smell will disappear within a few minutes and leave the area clean and shiny. There is no need to rinse the vinegar away.

Homemade Soft Scrub

  1. Mix together some inexpensive hair shampoo or a mild liquid soap with about 1/8 of a cup of baking soda until it is creamy in texture, as suggested by Better Homes and Gardens. This homemade cleaner is mildly abrasive but it will not scratch your hot tub surface.

  2. Place a small portion of the mixture on a damp sponge and wipe down all the hot tub surfaces, adding more of the cleaner as you need it.

  3. Rinse the hot tub thoroughly with water and drain the tub.
