How to Get Grease Out of Carpet

Whether it's an old or new stain, grease can be intimidating to remove from carpet. However, with a few key products and some patience, you can get the grease up. Some stains may need all of the methods, while others may only require the first.

Food is a common culprit of grease on carpet.

Step 1

Scrape up any excess grease with a butter knife.

Step 2

Sprinkle baking soda on the grease stain. Allow it to sit for about 15 minutes to soak up some of the grease.

Step 3

Vacuum the baking soda from the spot. Be careful not to rub at the stain with your vacuum.

Step 4

Blot at the stain with dry-cleaning solvent using a clean, white cloth until the solvent is absorbed.

Step 5

Place 1 tbsp. of grease-cutting dish washing detergent in 2 cups of warm water along with 1 tbsp. of white vinegar.

Step 6

Dip a clean, white cloth into the solution and place on the stain.

Step 7

Blot at the spot until the solution is absorbed. Keep switching to clean areas on the cloth or get a new cloth when this one is completely dirty.

Step 8

Use a sponge and cold water to flush the area of the detergent solution. Blot dry.
