Candles are not only functional, they can be decorative, and therefore are items that you would want to take with you when you move. Candles are often an investment that you want to protect, so moving them properly is important. Remember that even with the most careful packing, delicate candles are at risk of breaking or even melting.
Packing your candles properly will help ensure that they are moved to your new home without incident. Use the original packaging if you still have it. These packages are usually custom made for the specific candle, working to relieve pressure on areas that are more at risk of breaking.
If the original packaging is not used, bubble wrap and packing peanuts should be used. Each candle should be individually wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed in a moving box filled with packing peanuts. The bubble wrap and peanuts will help to protect the candles from breaking if dropped. Tape the box closed and label it fragile so you don't forget about it. When packing a truck, the candles should be placed on the top of stacks of boxes rather than on the bottom to avoid crushing the box and the candles within.
When moving candles you must consider heat. It is not safe to assume that candles will not melt during even a one- or two-day move. If candles are placed in a moving truck, chances are that they will melt or the temperature will not hold steady, causing softening, breaking or change in shape. Therefore, it is not recommended that candles be placed in a moving truck unless you are traveling across town and the box will be back in a cool environment before melting can occur.
If possible, keep candles with you during a move. Consider putting it near an air conditioning vent if placed in a vehicle, and keep it out of the sunlight. Remember that vehicles heat up quickly so the candle box should be the last one placed in the vehicle and the first one removed for the best results.
If the move is long distance and the candles cannot be kept with you and you don't want to take the chance of having them melt in a moving truck, the best option is to ship them. Shipping will usually expedite the moving process and most items can be insured. If shipping, be sure they can be signed for and moved indoors as soon as possible. Insurance is a must, because even express shipping will not guarantee that the candles will not sit in a warm vehicle.
