How to Remove Scratches in a Black Porcelain Sink

For durability and aesthetic purposes, porcelain can be an optimal choice for bathroom fixtures. Porcelain sinks are available in a variety of colors to complement any decor. Because of its versatility, black is often a popular choice. Occasionally, these sinks may be affected by superficial damage such as scratches. These are problems that can usually be addressed without having to contact a professional.

Step 1

Check the extent of the damage. Do-it-yourself surface repairs are only recommended for small jobs. If the sink has a fair amount of damage, it may be a better choice to go with a professional who can resurface the fixture. However, if it is a small scratch, it can be remedied with relative ease.

Step 2

Choose a porcelain repair kit. If the company that manufactured the sink offers repair kits, check there first, as it will likely be easier to make a good color match. Because there are variances in the shade of black, it is recommended to go a shade lighter if an exact match cannot be found. It will blend easier with the rest of the surface.

Step 3

Clean the affected area thoroughly using soap and water. After drying, swipe rubbing alcohol over the area to make sure it is entirely free of grit and debris. Repeat the alcohol application if necessary.

Step 4

Ready the repair kit. Some kits will require mixing (compounds, coloring toners, etc.), while several kits available are ready in one step. If the kit does not come with a brush top applicator or small paintbrush, you will need to find one. Apply a small amount of repair paint to the area, blending toward the edges of the scratch. Allow to dry for an hour.

Step 5

Check the repaired area. Apply an additional coat of paint to the scratch if necessary. Several coats may be needed for the desired look. Make sure to allow each coat to dry thoroughly before adding additional paint.
