A faucet aerator is a screen at the opening of the spout which traps sediment and allows air to build the water pressure flow. Regular cleaning and replacement help to conserve water and maintain the fixture.

Step 1

Locate the aerator, which is a cap fitted with a screen at the tip of your spout.

Step 2

Remove the aerator by twisting the cap clockwise with your fingers.

Step 3

If the cap doesn't turn, cover it with a rag, to avoid scratches, and gently turn the cap with pliers.

Step 4

Turn on your water briefly to clear sediment from the faucet.

Step 5

Clean or wipe off any debris or build up on the threads of the faucet.
