How to Color Tile

If you are tired of the color of your existing ceramic tile, you can simply paint your tile a new color and quickly revitalize the room. You'll be surprised at how dramatically a new color can liven up a space. Painting over your ceramic tile saves the cost, time and labor of removing and re-installing tile, and you will have the satisfaction of completing the home-improvement job yourself. With the right materials and preparation, you can easily paint existing tiles a new color yourself.

You can paint ceramic tiles yourself.

Step 1

Mix the oxygen bleach powder and water in a bucket, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Liberally apply the bleach mixture to the tiles to be painted and let sit for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Scrub the tile surfaces clean with additional bleach mixture and a scrub brush. Rinse the area with clean water. Allow the tile and grout to dry for 48 hours.

Step 3

Paint the tile with a coat of oil-based paint, applying the paint with a low-nap roller. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 4

Apply a second coat of paint and allow the surface to dry for 48 hours.

Step 5

Wipe the painted surface with a clean rag to remove any dust that has settled during the drying time. Apply a coat of urethane over the paint, following the manufacturer's instructions for application. Allow to dry completely.
