You want to install drapes in your living room, but you are concerned that the heavy material will block too much sunlight and give the room a dark and gloomy atmosphere. Don't give up on those beautiful drapes. Installing sheer curtains under the drapes will provide privacy while letting in sunlight. Adding a pair of drapery tiebacks is a simple way to adjust the folds of the drapes. Drapery tiebacks come in a variety of styles that will match the décor of the room.
Buy two different curtain rods. Lightweight sheer curtains can be hung with a café rod or lightweight curtain rod. The rod needs to come out no more than 2 inches from the window. Heavier drapes will need a curtain rod that supports the material. The distance it comes out from the window will depend upon the weight of the material and the curtain rod itself, but it should come out at least 4 inches.
Install the hardware for a curtain rod or a café rod that will be used for the sheer curtains. The sheer curtain can be hung inside the window frame or on the frame. If it is placed on the frame, position it so that it is 2 inches from the outer side of the window frame.
Install the drapes' hardware. The hardware should be placed at the outer edge of the window frame. If the sheer curtains are being hung on the window frame, the curtain rod for the drapes should be installed so that it covers the curtain rod for the sheer curtains.
Insert the café rod or lightweight curtain rod through the end of the sheer curtain. Thread the rod through the curtain. Hang the curtain rod onto its hardware and adjust the sheer curtain so that its folds are even.
Insert the heavier curtain rod into one end of the drapes. Thread the rod through the drapes. Hang the curtain rod onto its hardware and adjust the drapes so that the material is evenly distributed across the window.
Determine where you want the drapery tiebacks on the window frame. Mark that position with a pencil. Install the drapery tiebacks to the window frame. Gather the drapes and place them inside the loop of the tiebacks. Adjust the folds of the drapes to your taste.
