Laying carpet in a home can be a daunting task. There are many steps involved in correctly laying down carpet that can be somewhat intimidating, especially to first-timers. Laying the carpet padding is one of the most important parts of the process and part of that procedure is taping the carpet pad. Knowing how to tape a carpet pad can make the entire carpeting experience run more smoothly and effectively. Fortunately, with the right materials you can tape a carpet pad in your home with minimal stress or trouble.

Step 1

Cut the seaming tape to fit the length of your carpet padding using sharp scissors or a sharp utility knife and make sure the adhesive side of the tape is facing upward.

Step 2

Center the tape under the edges of two abutting pieces of carpet padding to get a sense of where they will fit, and then move the carpet padding aside.

Step 3

Heat the seaming iron to the appropriate temperature. Heat the seaming tape by slowly and meticulously dragging the iron up and down the length of the tape.

Step 4

Press the edges of the carpet padding firmly into the seaming tape.

Step 5

Slide a heavy book back and forth over the carpet padding to firmly anchor the padding to the tape.
