Painting your stair spindles can revitalize an old or uninteresting staircase. In addition, painting the spindles a contrasting color can add visual interest to your room. The tight space between each spindle can make the job time-consuming and requires a considerable attention to detail. It may be easier to complete this project over a weekend. Painting your first coat at night before you go to bed will provide the spindles time to dry without the possibility of being disturbed by people walking up and down the stairs.
Sand all of your stair spindles. Wipe them down with a damp rag to remove any dust.
Cover any areas at the top and bottom of your spindles that will not be painted using painter's tape.
Pour your paint into a paint cup or small bowl.
Paint the top and bottom of each spindle using a small detail brush. Take care to get the paint as close to the top and bottom of the spindle as possible.
Paint the rest of each spindle using medium and large paintbrushes. Avoid drips by going slowly and not overloading your brushes. Allow the spindles to dry completely.
Sand the spindles gently to prepare for a second coat of paint.
Apply a second coat of paint and allow time to dry. Remove the tape after the paint has dried.
