How to Paint a Ceramic Tile Backsplash

Perhaps money is tight and you can't afford to replace your ceramic tile backsplash. You can save yourself some money by doing the next best thing: paint the ceramic backsplash and make it your own.

Step 1

Clean the ceramic tile backsplash thoroughly before painting. This is an absolute must, for if you don't remove any dirt, grime, oil, grease or other impurities, the paint you apply will not stick properly. If the tile is especially dirty, use a combination of a scrub brush and cleanser. If it is less dirty, you could probably get by with a sponge and cleanser. Allow the tile to dry completely before going on to the next step.

Step 2

Decide what design you would like to paint on your ceramic tile backsplash. If you like, you can draw it first on paper. Or you can draw the design freehand on the ceramic tile with a pencil.

Step 3

Paint your design on the ceramic tile back splash with either oil-based paint or water-based paint that contains a urethane resin. If you wish to paint the tiles one solid color, pour your paint into a tray and apply it with a low-nap roller. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 4

Seal the paint with a water-based urethane sealer. This will preserve your painted ceramic tile backsplash for a long time.
