Spray Painting a Lamp Shade

Identify the material of which the lamp shade is made. This is essential for ensuring you purchase the right kind of spray paint. There are spray paints designed specifically for use on plastic, metal, fabric or other materials. There are also multipurpose spray paints that can be used on a variety of materials. If the lamp shade will be used on a lamp located on a sun porch or other area that will be exposed to outdoor conditions, be sure to use a spray paint designed for outdoor use. In addition to colors that will complement any decor, a variety of finishes are available. You can paint your lamp shade to look like marble or granite. You can even give it a metallic finish to look like extravagant gold leaf. Use stencils to add decorative borders if you don't want to paint the entire lampshade. As with any other spray painting project, simply take the item or to a well-ventilated area. Spread a layer of newspaper or a drop cloth on to your work surface. Apply the paint according to the manufacturer's instructions. Most of these will direct you to hold the spray can 10-12 inches from the surface of the lamp shade and work quickly, keeping the can moving to apply a thin, even coat of paint. If you use a stencil, use painter's tape to hold the stencil in place and wait for the paint to dry completely before removing it.
