How to Clear the T5 Code on a Maytag Neptune Dryer

Meredith Jameson

The T5 error code on a Maytag Neptune dryer indicates a temperature control problem, which may have to do with the thermistor or heating element, or it may be much simpler in scope, such as restricted air flow.

The T5 error code on a Maytag Neptune dryer indicates a temperature control problem, which may have to do with the thermistor or heating element, or it may be much simpler in scope, such as restricted air flow. Clearing the T5 error code will require some troubleshooting efforts and may result in some repair if major components are broken or damaged.

Tip

Wear protective gloves when performing any maintenance or repair tasks on the dryer.

Warning

Contact Maytag for assistance if you are not comfortable with taking apart the dryer, identifying parts of the dryer or using an ohm meter. A professional can perform the necessary steps to identify the problem and make repairs as necessary.

  1. Unplug the Maytag Neptune dryer and wait 5 minutes.

  2. Restore power to the dryer and clean out the lint screen. Check the exhaust vent and clean extra debris or lint from the vent.

  3. Unplug the dryer if the T5 error code remains. Remove the two screws on the bottom edge of the front of the dryer.

  4. Pull the bottom front of the dryer down until the positioning clips release automatically. Disconnect the wires around the door switch. Pull the dryer front away from the housing completely and set aside.

  5. Locate the four screws around the sides of the dryer shroud (drum) and remove the screws. Lift the shroud up and out to remove it.

  6. Idenfity the thermostat, which is the small oval-shaped device to the right of the blower wheel. Check the resistance of the thermostat through the blue and red wires using an ohm meter, which should measure approximately 10K ohms at room temperature. If the thermostat measures much more or less than 10K ohms, the thermostat will need to be replaced.

  7. Determine the ohm resistance of the thermistor. The thermistor is the small round device located in front of and just below the blower wheel. If the thermistor measures around 10k ohms, the wire harness between the control board and the thermistor must be replaced or the electronic control board needs replacement. If the thermistor measures way above or way below 10k ohms, the thermistor must be replaced.

  8. Find the thermal fuse on the front of the blower cover and disconnect the wires. Attach the ohm meter across the fuse terminals to test continuity. Replace the fuse if there is no continuity or less than 10k ohms.
