If you find that the clothes in your Speed Queen washer aren't getting as clean as they used to, it might be time for a new agitator. The agitator is the plastic, spiral-shaped device in the center of the washer tub. These fixtures spin around, helping to move the clothes through the soapy water -- to agitate them. The first step in installing a new agitator is to remove the old agitator from your Speed Queen washer.
Unplug the Speed Queen washer from the wall socket where it is currently connected. Do not attempt to unplug the socket if the floor is wet from a flooded washer. Instead, turn off the power for the socket at the main circuit breaker.
Open the Speed Queen's hood.
Grasp the lower part of the agitator with your hand. With your other hand, turn the top of the agitator counterclockwise. The top cap of the agitator should unscrew from the top of the agitator.
Remove the agitator bolt, if present, with a socket wrench. Depending on the Speed Queen model, you may need to use a socket wrench extension in order to reach the bolt.
Tap the side of the agitator with a rubber mallet. Don't use a hammer, as this could damage the agitator or agitator shaft.
Grasp the underside of the agitator firmly with both hands. Move your head so that it isn't directly over the agitator and pull up on the agitator. You should feel it start to slide up and off the shaft when it is loose.
Continue pulling up on the Speed Queen washer agitator until it slides off the shaft.
