My Whirlpool Washing Machine Is Not Draining Completely

Whirlpool washing machines have many features, such as automatic water levels, soil sensors, steam and sanitize clean and specific item cycles. However, if the washing machine does not drain completely, these features will not be of much use. Trying to determine the cause of the problem and either resolving the situation or calling for service can help return the washing machine to normal function.

Cycle Selection

The cycle selection can make a difference in terms of how fast the washer spins and whether there is any water left in the tub at the end of the cycle. "Delicate" or "Hand Wash" cycles use a slower spin speed and may leave some water in the tub, which may make it seem as if the water did not drain completely. Selecting "Extra Low" or "Low" spin speeds can have the same result. Use a different wash or spin cycle for better water removal.

Excess Sudsing

If too many suds are created as a result of using too much detergent or not using high-efficiency (HE) detergent in energy efficient Whirlpool washers, the washing machine may not be able to drain all of the water from the tub. Select another drain cycle and press or select "Start" to remove the excess water and suds from the unit.

Drain Hose

Look to make sure the drain hose is not trapped against the washing machine or otherwise bent or kinked, as this can create a drainage obstruction. Clean out any obstructions from the drain hose and place the hose less than 96 inches above the floor, as placing it higher can force water back down into the washing machine. Clean other drains in the household and make sure the drain hose is secured but not sealed completely to a standpipe.

Pump Obstruction

Small items may block the pump in the washing machine, creating a water blockage. Turn off and unplug the washing machine and examine the edges closely with a flashlight for small objects that may be creating the problem. Empty pockets before washing and contact Whirlpool for service assistance if you cannot see or remove the foreign object(s).
