How to Replace a Filter for a Kenmore Elite

Kenmore manufactures a variety of products as part of its Elite appliance line. These products include dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators. Many Kenmore Elite refrigerators line have built-in water filters that clean the water for the icemaker and water dispenser. To get the best results from your Kenmore Elite's filtration system, you must replace the water filter every one to three months, depending on your water usage.

Step 1

Remove the Kenmore Elite filter from its packaging. Follow the directions on the box to remove any pieces from the filter that were added for protection during shipping.

Step 2

Soak the new filter. Place the filter into a container of water deep enough that the entire filter is submerged. Follow the directions on the packaging to make sure the filter is positioned properly in the container and soaks for the recommended amount of time.

Step 3

Locate the old filter on your Kenmore Elite refrigerator. On most Kenmore Elite models, the water filter can be found at the base of the refrigerator in the grille.

Step 4

Press the button by the water filter. The Kenmore Elite ejects the water filter from the grille. Pull the cap and the entire filter out of the unit.

Step 5

Take the refrigerator cap, or handle, off of the water filter. Turn the cap counterclockwise to unscrew it from the filter.

Step 6

Wash the cap in warm water if it appears dirty and dry the cap with a towel. Place the cap on the end of the replacement water filter, twisting it clockwise to lock it into place.

Step 7

Slide the filter into the Kenmore Elite refrigerator grille with the brand name of the filter facing upward. Continue to push the filter until you hear a click. If the filter won't click into place, rotate it slightly in the grille until it clicks.
