How to Replace the Bulb in a GE Refrigerator

Rich Finzer

As surely as you expect the sun to rise in the morning, when you open the door to your refrigerator, you expect the light to come on. If the interior light in your GE refrigerator has burned out, replacing it will usually take only a few minutes. Best of all, you won't need any tools to complete the job.

  1. Unplug the refrigerator.

  2. Open the refrigerator door and use your flashlight to locate the burned-out light bulb.

  3. Remove the bulb by unscrewing it in a counter-clockwise manner. After it has been removed, close the refrigerator door.

  4. Examine the old bulb to determine the wattage and whether it is a specially marked 40 watt "appliance" bulb. According to the GE "Knowledge Base" website, most GE refrigerators come equipped with 40-watt appliance bulbs.

  5. Acquire a replacement 40-watt appliance bulb and install it in your refrigerator.

  6. Plug the refrigerator back into the wall outlet. Open the refrigerator door. Your newly replaced refrigerator bulb should be glowing brightly.

Tip

The GE website indicates that in a pinch, you may substitute a standard 60-watt frosted glass bulb until you can obtain a new appliance bulb.
