Most Whirlpool refrigerators include a built-in ice maker, and many also include an ice and water dispenser built into the door. The ice maker is connected to a water line that runs behind the refrigerator to provide the water to make the ice. Whirlpool ice makers contain an automatic shut-off lever that is operated when the ice tray reaches its maximum capacity to ensure that excessive ice is not produced. Models with an ice and water dispenser built into the door allow users to place a glass in the dispenser, fill it with ice and then fill it with water.
Open the freezer door and locate the "On/Off" switch, located on the top right side of most Whirlpool ice makers. Switch the "On/Off" switch to the "On" position to turn on the ice maker. If there is no ice in the ice tray, it may take several hours for the ice maker to produce ice, as the water must be frozen. Once the ice is produced, it will be automatically dispensed into the tray.
Press the "Ice" button on the ice dispenser on the outside of the freezer door to toggle between crushed ice and ice cubes. Depending on the model of Whirlpool refrigerator, the words "Crushed" and "Cubed" will be displayed, or pictures depicting crushed ice and ice cubes will be displayed on the screen. Press the glass against the pad in the rear of the dispenser to dispense ice into the cup. Lift the cup off the pad to stop dispensing ice.
Press the "Water" button, which will either say "Water" or will have an image depicting water. Press the glass against the pad in the rear of the dispenser to dispense water into the glass. Remove the cup when you are finished.
