How to Clean a Clogged Keurig Coffee Maker

Keurig manufactures several styles of single-serving coffee brewers. Plastic disks called K-cups filled with coffee grounds, creamer and flavoring are inserted into a holder that punctures a protective foil seal. The machine requires regular cleaning, and when necessary a light on the display will read "DE-SCALE." Faulty K-cups or a general buildup can occasionally cause the exit needle to become clogged. Once clear, you must perform a descaling to fully clean and ready the machine for further use.

Step 1

Open the K-cup cover and simultaneously pull the K-cup holder from above and push it up from below the drip nozzle. Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the exit needle on the bottom of the holder. Remove as much of the coffee grounds as possible. Press the holder back into place.

Step 2

Pour 10 ounces of white vinegar into a measuring cup. Pour the vinegar into the cold water reservoir. Position the mug in the tray beneath the drip nozzle.

Step 3

Lift and hold the brewer handle for five seconds. When the blue "BREW" light flashes, lower the handle and press the button. Allow the brewer to run and dispense the vinegar into the mug. Discard the vinegar. Repeat a second time using the remaining 10 ounces of vinegar.

Step 4

Measure and pour 10 ounces of fresh water into the cold water reservoir. Position the mug beneath the drip nozzle. Start a brew cycle and allow the fresh water to brew into the mug. Repeat three times.

Step 5

Open the K-cup cover and simultaneously pull the K-cup holder from above and push it up from below the drip nozzle. Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the exit needle on the bottom of the holder. Remove as much of the coffee grounds as possible. Press the holder back into place.

Step 6

Measure 48 ounces of vinegar and pour it into the cold water reservoir. Position a large ceramic mug beneath the drip nozzle. Press the "BREW" button and allow the vinegar to drain through the machine. Empty the contents of the mug in the sink.

Step 7

Rinse the cold water reservoir and fill it with 48 ounces of fresh water. Run a brew cycle and discard the fresh water until the reservoir is empty. Repeat the process if "DE-SCALE" is still displayed.
