How to Polish Brushed Metal

Things You'll Need:

  • Brushed metal
  • Soft cloth
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 quart water
  • Clean cloth
  • Container
  • Metal polish
  • Orbital sander
  • Buffing pad
  • Polishing pad

Brushed metal is metal that gets a brushed appearance after it has been through an abrasion process, typically using a fine sand paper. The brushed texture of the metal is a permanent effect that gives the metal a well-finished look. The brushing effect leaves a distinctive look of fine lines on the metal and all the lines run in the same direction. Aluminum, nickel and stainless steel are all used as brushed metals. Brushed metal objects should first be properly cleaned s the polish can effectively bring out the luster in the metal.

Remove any dirt or dust from the surface of the metal by wiping it down with a soft cloth. This will prepare it for the cleaning and polishing process.

Make a cleaning solution consisting of ½ quart of water and ½ cup of vinegar. Place the vinegar cleaning solution in a container and stir the contents.

Get clean sponge or cloth and dip it into the container with the cleaning solution, and wipe the brushed metal with the cloth of sponge several times, ensuring that the surface of the metal is properly cleaned. This will remove any excess dirt or stubborn stains from the surface of the metal.

Air dry the metal or wipe it with a clean dry cloth until it is completely dry.

Use a buffing pad to buff the brushed metal. An orbital sander with a buffing pad will offer the best results, since it will effectively buff the metal.

Place the polishing pad on the orbital sander and polish the brushed metal. Repeat this step twice, or until the brushed metal has a shiny appearance.
