The Scag line of lawnmowers use a variety of switches and levers to make mowing your home or business' lawn as easy as possible. With the right settings selected, getting the grass as trim and flat as possible is a breeze. However, it's necessary to test all of these mower components to make sure they are functioning properly. Testing a Scag Power Take-Off (PTO) switch ensures that your lawnmower is not starting itself up incorrectly.
Get into the lawnmower and park it in an open area, such as the middle of a grass lawn; lock the parking brake by hand.
Turn the mower off by moving the throttle lever to "NEUTRAL" by hand; the lever is on the left side of the mower. Let the engine run for a few seconds before turning the ignition key to "OFF" and removing it by hand.
Pull the electric PTO switch up by hand; it is the knob on the mower's instrument panel.
Test the PTO switch by trying to start the engine by putting the key back in the ignition and turning it all the way to the "START" position; the PTO switch is turning the power off correctly if the mower's engine won't start after this test.
