How to Install a Traeger Grills Digital Thermostat

Wood pellet grills are sophisticated cooking machines designed for professional outdoor cooking or the dedicated amateur. They offer a variety of options that conventional grills do not, including digital thermostats. Traeger Grills produces a number of wood pellet grills of this type, and knowing how to install a Traeger Grills digital thermostat can make for precisely monitored grilling temperatures.

Step 1

Turn the switch/dial of the Traeger grill to the "Off" position.

Step 2

Disconnect the Traeger grill's power cord from the electrical outlet.

Step 3

Disconnect the smoker control's wiring by disconnecting the four Molex connectors on the underside of the pellet hopper.

Step 4

Remove the two screws holding the smoker control to the pellet hopper with a Phillips screwdriver. Set these screws aside for use in attaching the new digital thermostat.

Step 5

Remove the smoker control through the front of the pellet hopper.

Step 6

Open the grill door and remove the porcelain grill and grease drain pan to access the left side of the grill.

Step 7

Cut the cable tie securing the resistance temperature detector (RTD) wires to the RTD with wire clippers.

Step 8

Remove the screw and lock nut from the RTD mounting bracket.

Step 9

Thread the RTD wires through the center hole of the RTD grill filler then through the small hole in the left side of the grill. Continue feeding the wires until the bottom of the RTD can be inserted into the RTD grill filler. On newer grills, the hole in the RTD grill filler will be labeled "Digital Thermostat RTD Mounting Hole".

Step 10

Mount the RTD on the RTD grill filler using the 1/2-inch screw and lock nut and tighten securely.

Step 11

Locate the green terminal block on the back side of the digital control.

Step 12

Loosen the two screws on the back side of the digital control with a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 13

Insert a bare end of one of the RTD wires beneath one of the screws on the back side of the digital control and screw it into place with a Phillips screwdriver. Repeat this process with the remaining RTD wire.

Step 14

Feed the RTD and digital control wires through the opening in the pellet hopper.

Step 15

Insert the digital control into the opening in the pellet hopper.

Step 16

Screw the digital control in place with a Phillips screwdriver using the screws that held the smoker control in place.

Step 17

Connect the Molex connectors from the digital control to the matching colors in the grill.

Step 18

Replace the porcelain grill and grease drain pan and close the door of the Traeger grill.
