Things You'll Need
Kinetico water softeners are powered by kinetic energy. This means the unit powers itself to help reduce the amount of energy it needs from the home. This is an effective way to reduce energy costs. The Kinetico still utilizes a brine tank and rock salt so it is important to clean the water softener on a routine basis to ensure you minimize the amount of bacteria in your water lines.
Locate the large white or gray brine tank next to your softener system and take the lid off the tank.
Measure across the top of the tank to determine whether you have a 9-inch diameter tank or a 12-inch diameter tank. This will help you determine how much bleach to use. For a 9-inch tank, you will use 1 cup of bleach. For a 12-inch tank, you will use 2 cups of bleach. Use non-scented, household bleach. Pour the bleach into the tank.
Locate the control panel on the softener and turn the cycle setting to "Manual Recharge." The unit will purge the bleach through the brine tank and through the softener tanks. Do not use water in the house until the manual recharge completes.
