Regular cleanings can help a dehumidifier last longer and perform better. Because dust and other debris can collect on the hot and cold coils, fan blades and inside the water container in a short time, it is important to clean and maintain a dehumidifier. Dust and other debris can cause damage to the dehumidifier and prevent it from working properly. Cleaning your dehumidifier once or twice a month will also save you money in the long run.

Step 1

Detach the water container from the dehumidifier. Even though this container is only used to store water, it still needs to be cleaned at least twice a month. Use a damp cloth to remove excess minerals or particles found inside the container. Allow container to dry before using.

Step 2

Remove the air filter from the dehumidifier. Examine the filter to determine whether it needs to be changed. The instruction manual will tell you how often to change the air filter. Follow the instructions to ensure your dehumidifier is working properly at all times.

Step 3

Clean all coils inside the dehumidifier. Use a small brush to remove buildup, oil and other contaminants.

Step 4

Clean the blades of the fan using a damp cloth. Remove all dust and buildup.

Step 5

Inspect the inside of the dehumidifier to make sure all the parts are clean and in working order. If any parts seem damaged, consult the user's manual or contact a home-appliance repairman.

Step 6

Reattach all parts of the humidifier after cleaning before turning it back on.
