When shopping for the best upright vacuum cleaner, several things should be considered. Ease of use, performance, filters, cost for maintenance, weight and maneuverability are just a few considerations. The Oreck and the Dyson vacuum cleaners are popular brands and offer many features that will make cleaning easier.
The physical appearance of the Oreck does not compare well to the modern, high tech look of the Dyson. The Oreck looks simple and plain. The Dyson has bright colors and modern lines. Looks are not everything, but the Dyson is designed to catch the consumer's eye.
The Oreck does not work as well on hardwood or bare floors. The beater bar cannot be turned off and instead of being sucked up, small objects will be pushed out from under the vacuum. With the Dyson, the beater bar can be turned off with a push of a button. This feature is good when using the extended hose while the vacuum remains stationary. With no beater bar running, you will not ruin your carpet. Both have good sucking power; however, the Oreck has only one speed which can be too much power for small rugs.
The Dyson vacuum comes with all the attachments on board for easy access. There is no bending over to locate the attachments. The handle detaches with a hose to allow cleaning tools to be attached. With this feature, you can clean high or hard to reach places such as walls, stairs or corners. The Oreck does not come with attachments. To clean corners, stairs or any area requiring a special tool, it is not possible. With the purchase of an Oreck, a smaller hand-held vacuum with attachments is included. The cord on the Oreck is shorter in length compared to the Dyson. With the Oreck, you will be starting and stopping often to vacuum large areas.
The Oreck vacuum has a filtration system that eliminates a large percent of allergens which include, mold spores, bacteria, pet hair and dust. The bag is made of a multi-layered material that helps filter the air while vacuuming. The inner bag is designed to keep the dirt and dust locked in and not re-released in to the air when changing. The Dyson has a lifetime filter, as it can be washed and reused, saving money.
Canister Versus Bag
The Dyson vacuum is bagless with a canister that holds up to 2 quarts of dirt compared to the Oreck, a bagged vacuum, that holds up to 8 quarts of dirt. Emptying the canister of the Dyson can be messy. With a push of a button, the bottom will open and the dirt and dust will be released, however, this can release allergens back into the air. With the Oreck, the bag removal and replacement is easy while keeping the dirt and dust contained in the bag and not released back out in to the home.
The Oreck is lightweight, weighing only 8 pounds, while the Dyson vacuum weighs 19 pounds. The Oreck is easier to carry up and down stairs and not as cumbersome as the Dyson. The Dyson can be bulky and large to store, while the Oreck will lay flat and can also be hung up.
