Disassembling and Cleaning Buddy Heaters

Buddy heaters, manufactured by Mr. Heater, are propane heaters intended for indoor or outdoor use. The manufacturer recommends using these portable space heaters in garages, tents, patios and other well-ventilated areas. The portable Buddy heater can heat up to 200 square feet of space while the Big Buddy heater can heat twice that amount of space. You should periodically disassemble and clean your Buddy heater to remove built-up dust and debris.

Step 1

Turn off the heater by pushing the control knob down slightly then turning it clockwise to the "Off" position. Unplug the heater and allow it to cool down completely before disassembling and cleaning it. Take the heater outdoors to disassemble it.

Step 2

Remove the propane cylinder from the heater. Always detach the propane source away from open flames and never smoke while doing so.

Step 3

Bend and lift the top of the wire guard slightly to dislodge the prongs from the holes in the heater's front cover. Remove the entire wire guard.

Step 4

Remove the screw on the bottom of the appliance if you have a portable Buddy heater. If you have a Big Buddy heater, unscrew the four screws on the back cover.

Step 5

Remove the burner assembly located on the front of the portable Buddy heater. If you have a Big Buddy heater, lift up the back cover to release the plastic hooks and remove the entire cover. Then unscrew the three screws that attach the lower baffle.

Step 6

Use the smallest hose attachment on a vacuum to clean the interior of the heater. Remove any dust and spider webs. Use a pressurized air canister to remove dust from areas that are too small to reach with the vacuum. Clean the casing assembly, main burner orifice and the pilot.
