How to Remove a Maytag Range Top for Repairs

Kenneth Crawford

When servicing a stove, sometimes it is necessary to remove the range top. A Maytag range top can be removed for repairs fairly quickly, if you know how to go about it. Removing the range top does not require many tools and the average home owner can accomplish this task.

Once the range top is removed, the inside of the control area is accessible for troubleshooting or repairs.

Warning

Always disconnect power before working on appliances.

  1. Disconnect the power to the Maytag range. The best way to do this is to turn the circuit breaker off at the electrical box. If the breakers are not clearly marked and you are uncertain, you may need to test for this by turning a few breakers off and then on.

  2. Open the oven the door. Locate the two ¼-inch hex head screws that mount the top to the body of the stove. They are located on a flange above the oven door at each corner.

  3. Remove the mounting screws with a ¼-inch socket wrench. Some models also have retaining clips located in the back between the top panel and sides. If necessary insert a putty knife to disengage the clips.

  4. Grasp the top firmly with both hands, one on each side. Pull the top toward you about six inches leaving it flat on the oven until the connector wires are disconnected.

  5. Locate the wiring connector located between the top and the rear panel. It is white and, depending upon your model, there may be two. Press in on the tabs and pull them apart, disconnecting them from the range top.

  6. Grab the Maytag range top with both hands. Lift up and remove the top from the range.

  7. Set the range top down flat in a safe area. If the burners need to be serviced, place the range top face down on towels or other protective covering to avoid damage to the cooking surface.
