How to Adjust the Pressure Switch on a Goulds Pump

Adjusting the pump pressure might occasionally be necessary, such as to offset the effects of cold weather, for example. Do not exceed the maximum pressure for your particular Goulds pump, which can range from 65 to 80 psi, depending on the model.

  1. Remove the cube-shaped cover on the side of the tank connected to the Goulds pump to expose the pressure switch. The switch is on the side of the tank where the well pipe connects to the tank.

  2. Use a nut driver to twist the nut on the larger of the two springs on the pressure switch for adjusting the cut-in pressure, which is the pressure at which the pump activates. Twist the nut clockwise for higher cut-in pressure or counterclockwise to reduce the pressure. Take note of the pressure markings on the switch as you adjust the nut.

  3. Turn the smaller spring clockwise to increase the cut-out pressure on the Goulds pump or twist counterclockwise to lower the pressure. This setting adjusts the pressure level at which the pump shuts off.
