How to Treat Lumber to Prevent Termites

Termites can wreak havoc on the foundation and framework of your home. Simple soil treatments can be effective for a limited amount of time, but will deplete over the course of weather and soil changes. If you own a house predominately made of wood, and especially if you have a large wood deck, you should chemically treat the lumber prior to building. Chemical treatments are available at many home and garden stores and the application process only takes a couple of days.

Step 1

Purchase a borax-based chemical treatment solution, such as Boracare (generic Borada LP) or Timbor (generic Borada D). These solutions are available at most home and garden supply stores.

Step 2

Read the instructions carefully on the bottle of solution. Ensure that you wear the appropriate safety equipment such as gloves, mask and safety glasses.

Step 3

Apply the solution over the entire surface of the wood, using a paintbrush, or a garden hose spray adapter if you've purchased a type of solution that can be mixed with water.

Step 4

Allow the wood to dry for 24 hours; then apply a second application for added termite protection.
