The menthol in peppermint oil irritates the receptors of the olfactory organ of a mouse, thus repelling the mouse. Unlike chemical poisons, peppermint oil is all natural. In oil form, the concentrated amount of menthol in the peppermint can send mice scurrying away. Consider using peppermint oil to repel mice when the use of chemical mouse poisons can place small children and pets in harm's way. The peppermint plant comes from crossing apple mint with spearmint.

Place three cotton balls in the bottom of a paper cup.

Drip peppermint oil onto the cotton balls until saturated.

Set the cup in an area of the house where you believe you have a mouse problem.

Soak the cotton balls again when you notice that the peppermint smell isn't as strong.
