How to Install Mower Drive Belts on a Troy Bilt Mower

Keeping your Troy-Bilt mower maintained is part of your agreement for warranty coverage. These include checking the tires, sharpening the blades, lubricating the tractor and maintain drive belts. Drive belts become loose, worn and damaged from use. At the beginning and end of each growing season check your belts for damage and replace any that are cracked or worn. Check drive belts every time you change your oil as well.

Step 1

Locate the decal under the foot pedal that has the routing diagram specifically for your Troy-Bilt mower model. Note that owner's manuals may not have the most current schematic.

Step 2

Remove the old belt before installing the new one. Turn the steering wheel towards the left (direction is based on operator position when sitting in the seat). Remove the lock nut from the drag link, located behind the front left tire. Be careful not to rotate the ball joints.

Step 3

Place the new belt over the sheaves (pulleys and tensioners) according to your mower's routing diagram. Begin with the placing the belt over the engine pulley. Slowly work the belt to the rear of the mower. Pull the slack (loose part of the belt) to rear of the mower. Slide the belt over the transaxle pulley.

Step 4

Adjust the belt guide next to the engine pulley. The adjustment should be between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch away from the belt. Secure in place using a clockwise turn of the ratchet.

Step 5

Adjust the belt guide located behind and to the right of the engine pulley. Position the belt guide so that it is pointing all the way to the left. Secure in place using a clockwise turn of the ratchet.

Step 6

Adjust the belt guide located in the rear. There are two guides located together, adjust the one closest to the center so that it is pointing to the right. Secure in place using a clockwise turn of the ratchet.

Step 7

Adjust the belt guide located next to the transaxle pulley. The adjustment should be between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch. Secure in place using a clockwise turn of the ratchet.

Step 8

Adjust the belt guide located between the transaxle and next to the middle belt guide (the belt guide adjusted in Step 5). Position the guide so that it is pointing 50 degrees to the left. Secure in place using a clockwise turn of the ratchet.

Step 9

Replace the lock nut at the left front end of the mower, just behind the left front tire. This reconnects the drag link. Do not rotate the ball joints.
