Cub Cadet is an American company that produces and distributes gasoline-powered riding mowers. As well as providing motive power to the machine, a Cub Cadet's small gasoline engine also powers the dual cutting blades in the mower deck. The mower deck is located under the frame of the machine, between the wheels, and houses steel blades that rotate when the power takeoff -- or PTO -- is turned on. A mower deck that is out of adjustment may create an off-balance cut that may create gouges in a lawn at worst and uneven grass at best, if not taken care of promptly.
Front Deck Height
Park the Cub Cadet lawn mower on a firm and level surface, such as a driveway or garage floor. The front of the mower deck is supported by a stabilizer bar. Lift the mower deck to its highest setting by using the height adjustment lever beside the driver's seat. Don a pair of heavy work gloves. Reach under the deck and rotate the blade that is closest to the grass chute so that it is in a longitudinal position with the tractor. Measure the height from the ground to the front of the blade, then measure the height from the ground to the rear of the blade. Adjustment is needed if the front of the blade is not ¼ inch to 3/8 inch lower than the rear of the blade. Measurement of both blades is not necessary for front-to-rear adjustments.
Front Deck Adjustments
There will be either one or two adjustment jamb nuts, depending on your Cub Cadet model. Locate the nuts on the bracket mounted to the underside of the tractor in front of the cutting deck. Loosen the nuts on the back side of the bracket with a socket and ratchet wrench. Turn the nuts at the front of the bracket in a clockwise direction to raise the front of the deck or in a counterclockwise direction to lower the front of the deck. Tighten the nuts on the back of the bracket once the proper height is achieved.
Side Deck Height
You can adjust the mower deck from side to side, as well. Raise the deck and rotate both cutting blades so that they are perpendicular to the tractor. Measure from the ground to the outside edge of the left blade. Measure the right blade in the same fashion. If the measurements are not equal, you'll need to adjust the deck height from side to side.
Side Deck Adjustments
Locate the hex screw on the left-side mower deck hanging bracket. Loosen but do not remove the hex screw, using a socket and ratchet wrench. Rotate the adjustment gear directly behind the hex, turning a wrench in a clockwise direction to raise the left side of the deck or in a counterclockwise direction to lower the deck. Tighten the hex screw once the proper blade height has been achieved.
