How to Troubleshoot Troy-Bilt Trimmers
Weed trimmers allow you to get tough-to-reach grass and weeds. As with all other power lawn tools, problems sometimes arise. Oftentimes, troubleshooting your Troy-Bilt weed trimmer is a simple task and doesn't require an advanced knowledge of the inner workings of a weed trimmer.
Where to Start
Troubleshooting your Troy-Bilt weed trimmer starts with identifying what is happening, or in most cases, what is failing to happen. If it's having issues starting, for example, identify what is going on. Identify one of these common problems: failing to start, having a hard time starting or dying quickly. Other common issues are with the cutting head. In the case of cutting-head issues, identify whether the head will not advance the line or advances uncontrollably.
Fuel-Related Issues
Among the most common causes of engine and starting issues is the fuel. If the engine will not start, ensure your fuel tank is filled with fresh, clean fuel. Fuel over 30 days old can cause problems within your engine and entire assembly; always use fresh fuel in Troy-Bilt and other weed trimmers. Old fuel can prevent the engine from starting, as well as causing the engine not to accelerate or idle. In the case of old fuel, drain the fuel tank and refill it. Always prime your trimmer prior to starting. If you have a two-cycle trimmer, ensure the proper gas-to-oil ratio is used.
Other Engine Issues
Other issues that can cause engine problems are a dirty, old or broken spark plug, or a dirty or old air filter. The proper spark plug gap is listed in the "Specifications" section of your owner's manual. The TB32 EC, for example, uses a spark plug with a 0.025-inch gap. Cleaning the air filter involves washing the filter in soap and water, rinsing thoroughly and allowing it to air dry. After it is dry, spread SAE 30 motor oil on the filter and squeeze the filter to spread and remove excess oil.
Cutting Head Issues
If your trimmer refuses to advance the line, clean the cutting head thoroughly and allow it to dry. Refill with new line if you are out or low, and rewind the inner reel if it is bound up with line. If the line is twisted, rewind the trimmer line and remove any tangles.
