How to Use a Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers provide protection to the mattress underneath and create thicker, more comfortable bedding. Toppers are most commonly made with a foam material, and include memory foam and "egg carton" construction. Mattress toppers are available in a wide variety of thicknesses, so choose the design that best fits your needs. To ensure the correct match, test out several toppers at your local mattress store.

Step 1

Remove the mattress topper from its packaging.

Step 2

Remove all bedding from the mattress. Place the rolled or folded mattress topper on top of the bare mattress.

Step 3

Unfold or unroll the mattress topper over the mattress.

Step 4

Slide the topper across the mattress to adjust the position. The topper should evenly cover the entire top surface of the mattress.

Step 5

Place a fitted sheet or a fitted mattress cover over the topper, and replace the remainder of the bedding.
