How to Attach a Hemnes Bookcase to the Wall

Kimberly Johnson

The Hemnes bookcase is piece of furniture produced by Ikea that has one stationary shelf and four movable shelves on which to store items. It comes in white, black-brown and gray-brown colors. Due to the height of the bookcase, it can become unstable both with or without books on the shelves.

That is why the manufacturer requires that Hemnes bookcases be attached to a wall for stability. Pre-drilled anchoring holes allow you to accomplish this task.

  1. Assemble the entire Hemnes bookcase using the instructions provided in the box.

  2. Look around for a wall to install the bookcase. Turn on a stud finder and place it flat again the chosen wall. Move the device to the left and right until it lights up, indicating the presence of a wall stud. Mark the location with a pencil.

  3. Repeat the process, moving the stud finder farther to the left or right until you find another stud and mark it with the pencil as well.

  4. Move the Hemnes bookcase up to the chosen wall, with help of another person if needed. Look up under the top shelf toward the rear of the bookcase. You will see a pre-drilled hole on either side of the shelf to use for anchoring purposes.

  5. Move the Hemnes bookcase until the two holes line up with the locations of the wall studs. Use a pencil to draw new marks through the center of each hole.

  6. Move the bookcase back out of the way and drill a 1-inch-deep hole into the stud using a drill and 1/4-inch drill bit.

  7. Move the bookcase back into position, aligning the bookcase holes with those in the wall.

  8. Place a metal nut on top of the two anchor screws, all of which are included with the bookcase. Place the screws through the inside of the bookcase and tighten them with a screwdriver.
