A platform bed does not require anything more than a mattress for a good night's sleep. "Fully finished hardwood slats aligned horizontally provide all the support your mattress needs to feel comfortable and soft," the SimplyPlatformBeds.com states.
Platform beds either offer solid mattress foundations that are flat, or slats. Platform beds eliminate the need for box springs with low profile designs and minimalist styling.
Standard mattresses can be placed directly on the closely aligned slats of a platform bed or a solid surface. Memory foam mattresses, which are gaining popularity, must be placed on solid surface platforms only. Slats do not work with memory foam mattresses and can actually void the warranty.
Box Springs and Bunkie Boards
Box springs are required by some types of mattresses whether they are being used on a platform bed or traditional bed. Memory foam mattresses fall into this category. If the platform bed is a slat type, use a thin box spring called a bunkie board, or a standard box spring.
